Design Process

The EcoCasting curriculum was designed based on the research of the Ecological Forecasting project. Scientists and curriculum developers identified key environmental science concepts addressed in this research: Food webs, toxin bioaccumulation, and invasive species. Using these three areas, software developers designed NetLogo agent-based models that highlighted these concepts. In the summer of 2010, three high school teachers were selected as curriculum development fellows to write student activities to teach the EcoCasting research and the core content. Using backwards design (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) the teacher developers identified learning goals and wrote student activities to acheive them. Below is the Design Document used by the EcoCasting developers.
